Designship consists of a structured 2,000-hour, immersive work experience and six required online courses composed of varying modules. Each company provides a mentor to oversee the design apprentice’s training. As work activities are completed, the mentor approves the apprentice’s mastery of required competencies.
All apprentices take six required courses:
- Business Management: Principles, Practices and Perspectives
- Intrapreneurship in the Creative Industries
- Effective Team Leadership
- Project Management
- Organizational Effectiveness and Engagement
- Mentoring Skills for Leaders
Among the critical skills taught in these courses include: business acumen, project leadership capabilities, successful client interaction, intrapreneurial thinking, working effectively in teams, and a complete understanding of the company’s culture and processes. All courses are self-paced, facilitated by subject matter experts, and delivered through MIAD.
The Communication Design apprenticeship program focuses on critical and innovative problem-solving skills which enables apprentices to bring their creativity to an organization and effectively communicate their ideas. The program emphasizes the implementation of creative ideas and the design process, while mastering the management and leadership strategies needed to deliver business-focused outcomes.

The Interior Architecture + Design apprenticeship prepares designers to successfully create dynamic environments for a sustainable and eco-friendly future as team members and leaders within an organization. Apprentices are given a variety of projects to demonstrate their interior and technical design capabilities so they can emerge with equally honed abilities in design and organizational leadership skills.
The Interaction Design Apprenticeship readies the designer to successfully carry out the responsibilities of analysis, design, collaboration, guiding the product life cycle, consultancy, consumer interaction, and testing/product interactions. Included in the specific areas the program emphasizes is collaboration, communication, creating product prototypes, project management, planning and conducting usability tests.
The Product Design apprenticeship aims to prepare a new generation of designers capable of leading multi-disciplinary teams during the production process, establishing collaborative relationships within organizations, managing the logistics of a project, as well as conceptualizing, developing and communicating innovative ideas both internally and externally.
